What I found were two books in the teen section on Amazon: one is about a young girl (15) with a neighbor that is a 13 year old brain damaged Cuban refugee called Rooster. She doesn't love him, no, but falls for her rich new neighbor across the way, and eventually ends up in loads of trouble.

The other one I saw has the main character named Rooster. He's 17, not a good student and is given the task of working with an adult special needs bowling team - they are undisciplined and he has to get them eligible for the Special Olympics. He's paired up with the principal's bossy daughter (the principal gave him this assignment), Elma. The summary doesn't say they fall in love and there aren't any reviews. The young man has to do this in order to graduate, and he's to write about the experience after, so I don't know if it's in journal form, either.

The link has the two books listed if you want more info. I tried love, Rooster; she loves Rooster and just Rooster (looking in teens) with little luck, unless by chance one of these it the right one.
