Voltemort heard the prophecy that is mentioned in the 5th book. Sybil Trewlany tells Dumledore this-
`The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches… born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies … and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not … and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives … the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies …
Snape, who was working for voltemort, heard only the beginning part about someone who might conquer him. He told his master and Voltemort decided to kill him as a baby. He never heard the last part, the part that said that he would be vanquished.

there was a Prophecy that Prof. Trelawney told Dumbledore when Harry was a baby. Snape heard the part that said there was a baby born at a certain time to parents who had defied Voldemort 3 times. so Snape told Voldemort this and that is why he wanted to kill Harry

One of Voldemort's cronies (Snape) overheard a prophesy (one of the few legitimate ones by Trelawney) that someone who had a late July birthday and had parents who had defied Voldemort three times would someday destroy him. He told Voldemort, and Voldemort set out to finish the prophesied kid off while he was still an infant (and an easy take-down, or so he'd thought). Voldemort figured that the kid was Harry (the other candidate was Neville Longbottom), and so he tried to kill him, but instead, he accidentally transferred some of his abilities to him that would make it easier for Harry to take him down. It's one of those self-fulfilling prophesies, in a way.

Because Snape overheard a prophecy Trelawney gave in Dumbldore's pressence and rushed to tell Voldemort. However, Snape did not hear the full prophecy and, according to Dumbledore, came to regret telling Voldemort the prophecy. Voldemort thought he was carrying out the prophecy based on what Snape had heard.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... And the Dark Lord will mark him as equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives."

Because James and Lily were such powerful wizards that Voldie knew Harry would be more powerful than his parents. And the prophesy that Harry would kill him, ect.
