I have put high grade fuel in, tried oil additive. Considering a complete oil flush and put synthetic oil in there. How long will my car last with this ticking noise? What should I do about this? Mechanic told me to slap a $1000 sticker on and said it would last a couple weeks. My dad told me that his father had a similar noise on his old cavalier and it lasted 3 years. Any suggestions? 1989 Buick Regal Auto Tranny 112000 K V6 2.8L Thanks all!

I assume it will last for quite awhile. You have a valve lifter that has collapsed or is stuck, or maybe a worn cam lobe. Your performance will degrade some, but this isn't a performance car anyway. Just don't over react, it isn't critical but it is annoying. You may be getting close to rebuild time.

Its normal sounds for a 2.8 GM motor with good miles on it. This sound can come from a few things, Valves sticking, lifters getting tired, and worked in Cam lobes. It's normal, as long as you don't race the motor and treat it nice you'll be able to run the car for another 112000 KM. Keep the oil changed in it every 3000 miles. dirve it at 65 MPH and the motor will run fine. Change your mechanic, he should know better then that.

okay when was the last time you changed oil? if over 3000 miles change the oil, go to a heavier grade high milage, say castrol high milege 20 w 50. an see what that does for ya if still noisey, your dad is correct about it goin a long time but the older engines were more tolerant of this condition than the newr ones if this is a 3.3 or 3.8 liter where the oil pump is external you might try replaceing the oil pump pressure relief spring this might help.if you want after that its takeing the intake off and replaceing the lifters ( which I don't recommend) after that its sell it or drive it till it drops

Have the camshaft check, also the bearings, and get new lifters, or repair the ones, if not worn, your car has. After all, it has over 60,000M. By the way, if 87 or 89 octane is recommended for your vehicle, don't go over it, you might end up loosing the catalytic

id just try a good oil change on it first, i run a small shop, and i see those with a lot more miles than that on them,a lot of times just changing the oil will correct this problem, its worth a try anyway, good luck with it.
