Just multiply the two numbers together. 26' x 23' = 598 square feet.

One square foot is 12" on one side, 12" on the other. Think of it as 26 rows of 23 seperate square feet.

By the way, be sure to order a little excess material, to account for waste. (like an extra 50 square feet or so)

It would be: 26 ft x 23 ft = 598 square feet
An easier way to think of it is if you had a floor 1 foot wide by 26 feet long, you would need twenty six squares with 1 foot sides, or twenty six square feet. For your room, you need 23 rows of twenty six square feet, or 598 square feet.

ft is unit of distance
square feet (sq ft) is unit of area

tip:
square feet = ft * ft

Area (kitchen floor) = length * width
= (26 ft) * (23 ft)
= (26 * 23 ) * (ft * ft)
= 598 * (square feet)
= 598 square feet
