The very best bet is to avoid places like Walmart and all of the big chain pet stores. Some of the big Chain stores will have good employees, while others will not and even if the employee knows their stuff, the store rules prevent some things from being done that really need to be done.
Go to smaller, independent local stores. The mom and pop places where as often as not it will be the owner that helps you with your fish. They know their stuff and usually take better care of the fish and offer a better selection as well. Somethings may cost a few bucks more, but the advise and assistance is worth it.

Generally, Wal-mart is not known for having healthy fish. Of course, this could happen from any store, fish are very sensitive to changes in temperature, pH, and quality of the water.
PetSmart takes care of their fish very well. This isn't to say that they never have fish die, but they do have a guarantee on their fish. If your fish dies within that time period you can return the fish with a receipt and get an exchange.
Make sure you float your fish for at least 10 minutes to allow the water temperature to adjust. This minimizes stress. Also, if you haven't invested in a water testing kit, that would be a good idea. If the water quality is poor, the fish could easily have been shocked.
Good luck!

Well I am sure you have heard this before but I have also brought fish from Walmart; and guess what they have lived for 2-4 years, my problem with walmart is after buying mine, were two kind of fish I saw when returning to Walmart, ones that were dead and ones that were dying. It disgusted me to see that the same fish that were dead on Monday were still there on Wednesday. You think after telling them they would do something, nope they left it there and was like what ever! Petco and Petsmart are not ace on my list either, but, they are better than Walmart in a few ways! Walmart has any employee taking care of the fish area, you work the kids clothing today and fish tomorrow. Petco and Petsmart are more prone to be in the same areas. Your local aquarium mom and pop shop is the way to go. They may cost more but take more care of their fish, ask you questions and provide more assistance! With that being said you can also have the pleasure of breeding your own, you know where they come from and can provide them a great start, places on the net are EXCELLENT, you order your fish (they cost about 25.00) for shipping any amount. You get great fish and a good cost and from top breeders.

you can cut and paste this link for online fish, or put a search in google for online fish. Aquabid.com is good for purchasing a large bundle for a small price, you'll get like 6 discus for the price of two and pay 25 for shipping which is a GREAT deal. check it out!

I don't know about Wal-marts in general, just the one closest to my house. Very few in my area have live pets, except that one. When I have gone in, it has made me very depressed for the fish. They have nothing to amuse them, there is no gravel, decor or anything in there, except too many fish and a few dead ones, the fish seem depressed and bored. I would love to rescue all of them, but I cannot afford it. I bought my mollies from a petco, they have treated me wonderfully every time I have gone in, the lady I have dealt with is kind enough to take the time to make sure that I am getting proper amounts for each gender, and if I like one fish out of the ten in there, she will chase it down for me. I have worked at a walmart, and not only was there no one there in the pet department very often to feed them or anything, but the few that went were very inexperienced and rude. Little nerve racking to me.

WalMart treats their fish horribly. You can continue to buy fish there actually, since they do have a 90day return policy(it's stated on the bag if the customer service rep. tries to argue it down to three days). You'd be doing the fish there a favor. If one lives, it will have been saved a horrible fate in the WalMart tank. I, personally, get some fish there for just such a purpose. (It almost feels like saving an animal from a kill shelter).
But anyway, a good place to get fish. I would look into the local fish store. If they specialize in fish, they have to know about them. And look at the tanks, do they appear overstocked? A gallon of water per inch of fish is a good recommendation. A little overcrowding isn't too bad in a petstore, but only a LITTLE! 50 fish in a little tank is not acceptable like walmart has it.
Petco. tends to be pretty good too. Just remember, wherever you go, look at the condition of the fish and the condition of the tanks.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, although not in the least bit surprised.
I used to buy all my fish from Petsmart (Pets at home, in UK) and although I managed to save most of them, quite a few did die within the first few days.
I can't say that all large pet supermarkets are bad, as like Magic man has said, some do have good staff working for their aquatic department. However, in most cases, the people they employ do not have the same level of experience or commitment to the care of fish as you will find at your local fish shop.
I have often found dead fish in ALL the tanks at pet supermarkets. It is a very sorry sight to behold. Many of the fish will also have diseases and parasites, where they have not been quarantined.
I feel that the pet supermarkets just see the livestock as money, and want to sell as many as possible, as quickly as possible. Yes, they may cost a good deal less, but you really do often get exactly what you pay for. I.E-fish that are of bad quality and often die an untimely death.
I have seen employees at Petsmart advise first-time buyers to keep 2 male Betta's in a 3G tank. Now if that isn't ludicrous, then I don't know what is!
I now only ever purchase food and equipment from pet supermarkets. And whilst i'm there, I often find myself stepping in to advise poor people that are being given totally wrong information by unknowledgeable staff.
The best thing to do, is to search the internet for all of your closest aquatic retailers, then pay them all a visit. Inspect the tanks for any dead or ill looking fish, and if the fish seem healthy and happy, and are kept in humane conditions, then you know you have found a great store. Another good piece of advise, would be to ask them a few questions, to test whether they have good knowledge of their fish. An important one that I always ask, is exactly what quarantine procedures they follow.
Remember that in almost all stores, all the tanks use just one big filter system, and if one tank has dead fish, or ill fish, then the chances are, all of the tanks will be affected.
A few dead fish is not nescessarily bad, as even the best aquatic stores occasionally loose livestock. BUT, when you see many dead fish, you know that there's a problem!
It really is worth your time to inspect the stores and find one that you like, and that you know you will always be able to depend on.
Hope this helps!

I have purchased all my fish from either Petco or Petsmart and they seem really happy and healthy. My little brother always got fish from walmart, and every time I told him it's not a good idea. I wouldn't recommend getting a fish at walmart. Yes it is a great way to save money, but the fish aren't going to last. So far, Petsmart is your best bet.
Good Luck.

Oh big surprise there, the employees at walmart not knowing how to care for their fish. That's the number one place you don't want to buy fish trust me I worked there at one time. They found it was cheaper to just go on a let them die rather than treat them and sold fish with ich all the time. No the best place to purchase a fish is a pet store specializing in fish. Like petsmart or petco.
