I'm ttc and it's a little harder than I thought to give up my Mt. Dew. I've cut down to no more than one a day...but I'm just wondering how caffeine affects the baby.

All of the other posters are correct that large doses of caffeine can be dangerous to a fetus. It is a stimulant that could overstimulate the baby's heart and lead to miscarriage, but you'd have to drink a LOT for that to happen. It can also lead to vasoconstriction (veins getting narrower) and decrease the amount of bloodflow to the placenta and fetus. This could lead to intrauterine growth restriction, which means the baby is small and undernourished.

I usually have 1 or 2 caffeinated drinks a day, and at first it would make the baby a little hyperactive. Now she is used to it and it doesn't effect her.

Recent studies found that consuming caffeine over a certain amount appears to increase the rate of early miscarriage. This may be a confounding factor as women who drink a lot of coffee tend to have other poor health habits (ask me how I know this?).

I don't think they really have a good grasp as to what it does, but it likely does something to the placenta. According to March of Dimes, they aren't even sure it is a problem, but in the absence of proof, they recommend limiting caffeine.

Having one a day shouldn't be a problem.

Actually recent studies have proven that 2-3, 8oz cups of regular coffee (Not espresso) OR 6 cans of soda are safe amounts of caffeine to consume while TTC or while pregnant. I have also had this confirmed by several OB/GYNS.

Because caffeine is addictive and it can cause your baby to be hyper. Caffeine is like a drug, and you don't want your baby to be born dependant on caffeine. And Mountain Dew has the highest amount of caffeine in any pop. If you just have to have pop, try Faygo, they have a lot of flavors that are caffeine free. Just make sure you check the labels, not all of them are caffeine free. Wish you well!

Supposedly, it makes it harder to conceive. I'm not sure if this is a scientific fact, or an urban myth. I know lots of women who drink coffee throughout their pregnancy and their babies are fine.

one can a day is fine. Caffene can thin the blood, which can lead to miscarrage. Plus, the baby is the size of a pea for the frist month or so, imagine hao small its heart is!!! One or two cans a day is ok, keep it under 300mg of caffeen a day.
