I'm playing piano for some wedding parties this summer, and I'm not sure what songs I ought to learn. The hotel manager asked for "piano bar" music, but I'm not sure what that is (I've never been to a piano bar).

Can you suggest the names of some songs that I ought to learn? Thanks! :)

I've played for wedding functions for over 40 years & played in piano bars for over 30. There is no single kind of music played - jazz, blues, pop, semi-classical - all kinds. For wedding parties, you want to pick "happy" romantic songs; standards - Misty, I Will Always Love You, Love is Here to Stay, Just the Way You Are - always are good. Mix it up with some ballads, some upbeat (but nothing "bangy"). You're to provide pleasant background for people's conversation - not a concert - so keep the volume on the softer side. You can find Wedding Fake Books that will help you learn appropriate songs quickly - also a general fake book (1200-1500 songs) can give you a wide variety of songs popular over a wide time frame. Wedding guests always include older relatives of the bride and groom, so they will want songs they're familiar with, too.

YOu can play anything that sounds like jazz or blues. If not play classical music. I havent been in a piano bar either, but I've been to places where there are musicians that play the piano. They play jazz music like Four play or Kim Walters or Ray Charles. If thats not what they are looking for then play the most famous classical music like Beethoven or Gioachino Angelo. I hope any of these work! :-D

Anything by Burt Bacharach should be fine. Though I've always preferred Gershwin. Some prefer Pop Jazz tunes, but old standards by Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett would do just as well.
