The Nats play in the District of Columbia, which is (sadly) not a state but a federal district.
The Nats are actually the third MLB team - and the first NL team - to call the nation's capital home. The first Nationals/Senators team became the Minnesota Twins in 1961. (Oh, the irony. When MLB talked about contraction, they targeted the Twins and the then-Expos.) The second Senators team played from 1961 to 1972 before becoming the Texas Rangers. (More irony: Dubya used to own this team.) Some, namely Peter F. Angelos, could argue that the Baltimore Orioles were Washington's de facto team pre-2005.

Well, it depends on whether they're at home or away. Assuming that you're talking about them playing at home then they don't play in a state as their home park, RFK Stadium, is in Washington DC.
