He probably is but Darko Milicic is right up there. He was drafted 2nd overall when Melo, D-wade and Bosh was still on the Board.

I think that's a little bit harsh on Sam Bowie. Looking back, he has a pretty decent career, too bad he has been chosen ahead of the future hall of famers, like barkley, stockton, jordan, and alike. We can talk about this the whole time, whether or not the blazers should have taken jordan instead fo him,but the thing is, jordan won't be a jordan (as far as the rookie season is concerned) if he has to share the ball with drexler. And for the greatest draft mistake, I think that belongs to the clippers when they selected Olowokandi, a center from a little known athletic in Hawaii, when they have jamison in the draft. Jamison was an all-american in college, and the clippers drafted kandi man solely because of potential. Just look at the potential now.

well if the truth be known, in that draft there were 2 blue chip players. akeem and sam bowie. michael really was a late first rounder at best and other than the shot that won the national title for nc he had a pretty lackluster college career. and since houston was lobbying hard for akeem and since both he and sam bowie were rated about the same pre draft the blazers took bowie, houston took akeem, and chicago took michael. really portland made the right choice in that particular draft and had bowie not broken his leg he too might be one of the greats. he was having a real good season before he got injured and who knows what would have been but portland did the right thing. worst draft choice ever? not by a long shot. more likely worst luck ever for the blazers.

No. Bowie was a great player at College. Him and Mel Turpin formed a twin towers duo at Kentucky. Portland had drafted Clyde Drexler the year before, so it made sense to grab a big man. Remember, Jordan was not the dominant force in College. No one could of predicted how great he would be in the NBA. Bowie played pretty well for the Nets when traded for Buck Williams. Nah, Bowie wasn't a bust. That honor goes to someone else.

I would say Michael Olowokandi was one of the worst. He was a number one pick of the 1998 draft and has been a role player where ever he has been. Sam Bowie at the time was a good player that would fit the Blazers. They already had Clyde Drexler so where was Jordan going to fit in. Who knew at the time Jordan would become the player he was.

you have a case on that one. sam bowie drafted over michael jordan? MJ was consensus all-american coming off a stellar college season. played for the olympic team in 1984 (los angeles) and the world came to know who michael is. sam bowie...sam who?
even Bobby Knight encouraged a friend of his who has a very high pick to take michael jordan to which his friend said that his team needed a center. Knight, having coached MJ in the olympics said, "Let Michael play center!" (of course that's just an expression but that's how good michael is coming from the draft. if that friend of his was from houston, they did good in picking up Akeem Olajuwon (who became Hakeem)... but if that friend was from Portland...i truly believe that to this day he has yet to have a good night sleep as michael jordan keeps creeping in his dreams.
The reason they didn't draft jordan is they have clyde? that's the lamest excuse there is. can you not have two players who play the same type of game? Michael plays big guard and Clyde plays the #3 spot! What's wrong with that? That's double-trouble!
Terrible pick, Portland!

i think of of it fairly is a sprint harsh on Sam Bowie. looking decrease back, he has a marginally first rate occupation, too undesirable he has been chosen in basic terms earlier the destiny corridor of famers, like barkley, stockton, jordan, and alike. we are able to communicate this the full time, no count if or now no longer the blazers ought to have taken jordan particularly fo him,in spite of the undeniable fact that the factor is, jordan isn't a jordan (as some distance because of the reality the rookie season is disturbing) if he has to share the ball with drexler. And for the suitable draft mistake, i think of of that belongs to the clippers on the same time as they chosen Olowokandi, a center from a sprint time-commemorated athletic in Hawaii,on the same time as they have jamison indoors the draft. Jamison develop into an all-american in college, and the clippers drafted kandi guy entirely because of the reality of skill. in basic terms look on the ability now.

Without a doubt, it was Len Bias. Less than 48 hours after Boston made him the #2 pick in the 1986 NBA Draft, he died of a cocaine overdose. At least Sam Bowie had a solid, if not great career.

Considering Michael Jordan became the best player of all time, I think it is accurate to call Sam Bowie the worst mistake of all time...

Sam Bowie was definitely a bust, and the team that picked him definitely regrets it, but thats how the draft works. Teams pick on scouting report and a little on faith. The team who picked him had faith in him when he was actually a bust. Yes, he is a HUGE bust, bigger than the Kandi man
