starstdnt: The Will is positive, but the judgment is negative. Is war of the Will or of the Judgment.

Swami G: your statement is false and your answer is based on your statement; philosophy never limits nor has limits, only the limit concept and its practical application, human reality. The subject to know is indifference, not indifferent as such.

PP: Yes, practical critical activity is the only acceptable kind of action before violent defense. I think Mr. Crane is saying that indifference precedes, not follows, violence, but I can see how your sequence could be negatively realized. The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

Disiderata: I agree. I may add that in the absence of a universal love, all other relations compress under external negativity.

Active: Indifferent to people suffering of violence, not indifference for that which has no difference....

AOP: 'the unjustified purpose'...The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative. Utilizing time effectively and efficiently is not in its self of moral essence.

True.

But of course. I love Stephen Crane; he's the best Civil War--or perhaps any war--writer by far.

Let us put it in the words of a modern militant, and all will be clear, I hope.

"If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem."*
(meaning, of course, that not being part of the solution is to be indifferent, ergo, it is to be militant, by default)

Good for you for reminding us.

Indifference is caused by an aggressive act because that aggression has caused an imbalance of values and the values lost are what we are indifferent to. Just like if war occurs, there is an imbalance of values to fight and hate thus the values of peace and harmony (which may not hated) have an indifferent feeling for them. We then ignore the ones and are indifferent to the ones that have these values instilled in them; this is why good ones have it worse because we accept the evil that exists in this World and choose to ignore and be indifferent to the innocent and right ones, that devalues their lives. The ability to be aggressive by being ignorant itself must mean you must direct your aggression on a value that supports the value that you are being indifferent to so when you hate or are indifferent to one value, then the supporting values will be hated too. It is a cycle of hate that can only be stopped if the aggression is criticized, and made to be stopped. Then there is peace but yes indifference is made by a militant and aggressive act but it is an effect, even a side effect rather than the direct aim of the militancy.

What is the cause of indifference? The inappropriate
causality; the unjustified purpose. In other words, sometimes
the most appropriate action is inaction; don't press the
big red button to prove responsibility for the big red button,
it is irresponsible to do so. Consider a crowded city
with a crowded sidewalk, and all the people who
indifferently walk past each other because they have
no purpose to stop and chat. Action should be reasonable
and purposeful.

"Indifference" as soley a militant view? Considering, "Interest" as it's opposite, I think that is a very limited way to view things.
