I was shown in person how to replace my speedo cable, and later picked up a new cable from the dealership. It is an unmarked cable, but the parts guy thinks there's a good chance it's the one I need. This new cable has one forked end (seems to fit on the wheel), and one end that is solid. I can see that the forked end is supposed to go on the wheel, but the other end doesn't fit into the back of my instrument panel. I removed only the windshield and kind of felt around blindly and tried to twist the cable into place. At first I thought that it was definitely the wrong cable, and I tried to put my old cable back on, and it didn't go on either! I can't help but think I'm doing something completely wrong and that there is really a simple solution. I'd rather not have to take the front fairing off, but it will give me a better view of the back of the instrument panel. any tips for me?

The end of the cable that goes into the speedometer is square.
It simply may not be lined up (like putting a square peg into a round hole).
Roll the bike forward to get the cable to turn while you're trying to get the cable into the speedo.
Or do it in reverse.
Remove the cable from the wheel.
Install the cable onto the speedo.
Turn the "wheel end" of the cable with a screwdriver or knife to line it up with the speedo drive on the wheel.

The "parts guy" should have been able to tell from your old cable if it is the right one (length, cable ends, etc should match exactly). The instrument end of the cable is usually a threaded cuff and square cable insert. You have to match the insert into the female end on the instrument panel, and then screw the cuff on. It has fine threads and needs to be put on fairly squarely to start. I would suggest that if you are having trouble getting it to thread on, you remove some more bodywork to get at it, or get someone to help. The wheel end is much easier to do because it is easy to get to. Good luck.
