Would you consider a mother telling her children that they cannot go to bed until they find her channel changer because she thinks they lost it verbal abuse?

For the record, none of the children lost it. The mother was the last to have it. It was unprovoked and it is also 11 at night - the mother is fully aware that I have a sports practice tomorrow early. It's vindictive.

And yes, there was extensive name-calling. And minor chair-throwing on the part of the mother.

As presented, not really. However, if they did not lose it, and she is accusing them and they really do not know what it is, it's a punishment that is not justified. And if she is calling them names, at the same time that this is happening, again, it is not justified.

Kids will end up walking on eggshells to not upset a parent if they are accused of things that they did not do (or did not intentially do) -- and if they do this, then the situation may border on verbal and/or emotional abuse.

But it really depends on the entire situation to really know.

I don't think that some adults realize what the words said do to a person when it comes to their parents, or friends. Depending on your age, this could have a bad effect on you. Hoping that you are at least a teenager, you should be able to understand the feelings that are between your real mom and your stepmom. I had lots of problems with a stepmom in the past, but I was an adult when my parents divorced so I was able to ward off negative remarks as I understood the source. You know the truth, rely on that.

I would call that mother mean! Why would she do that when it clearly doesn't teach the children any lesson. Children often make mistakes and it should not be so children have to worry every time they breathe if they're messing up or doing something wrong. Try telling that mother that maybe she needs to give the children a little slack. It sure sounds like she's being too rough on them; almost like boot camp.

It's not verbal child abuse. Stupid parenting tactics, perhaps. But abuse...no. Not everyone can be a perfect parent. Now you know what to get her for Christmas...a universal remote...get her one for every holiday until she has about 20 of them.

no. not unless shes downing them by telling them there stupid or something, ya know kids hide remotes good and maybe she needs it.as long as shes not putting them down. Ive had the same thing happen to me dozen of times.
