A domain name is the address of a website. The difference from a real world address of a building is that you can keep your address and move your website.

An example of a domain name would be mywebsite.com or yourwebsite.org

You need to register a domain and pay for it. I prefer keeping my domain registrations separate from my website hosting. If something happens to my website server or host I can always point my domain to a new server or host.

Also some website hosts as well as developers register domains in their name and that is bad practise. This means you don't own your own domain and might run in to serious trouble in future.

Remember to always use a reputable company when registering your domain.

Domain names are just addresses, simply put. You need an address in order to find a website.
Without a domain name, no-one can find you online.
