Teaching & talking about history is a very good thing. Allowing the past to become a negative & decisive part of your present success or failure, is not productive. I believe they are 2/separate things. There are many races of people who have been enslaved, mass-murdered, or generally treated horribly. Through study and discussion, we validate the lives of those treated so poorly in the past, and may help to keep from repeating it in the future. The horrible ways in which humans treat other humans seem unbelievable - and yet they happened...and are still happening today IN 2007 (ie: Dafur for example). We have heard people talk this way about the Holocaust also. I hope these lessons are things we NEVER forget....oh, and your 1st respondent is an excellent final example of why this history should be taught.

Its a part of history. If you are sick of hearing about it drop out of school or something. Hey I got an idea lets stop talking about the holocaust, all the world wars, the so-called "discovery" of America. Oh and better yet when and if the Iraq war ends lets not discuss that either. Do you see how foolish your question sounds. Not wanting to hear the truth is what breeds all these YA trolls and pseudo-intellectuals that don't know all the facts.

Ummm sweetie- its called American History... we need to hear about it not only because it happened but because it had an enormous effect on the economy of this country. Further, as a white person I have the privilege of knowing my heritage- I know that I'm Irish, German and English, I also know my family tree which stretches back to the 1700's. Most African Americans can only trace their heritage back to the late 1800's that's less then a few generations.
Finally, just because slavery no longer (legally) exists the racist institutions that created and enforced slavery still do. Until people of color are valued as well as white people are in this country we can't stop talking about it; in fact, we need to talk about it more and raise awareness.

Its time to move on and put slavery where it should be- in history. It should be taught as history- not as something that is still going on. No one alive was affected by it. No one alive was a slave in the US. Sure, it was a horrible thing, but much worse things have happened and been let go- more recently, too. How often do you hear about Jews hating Germans because of the holocaust? How many descendants are demanding reparations, or special treatment? None, as far as I know, and that was genocide, not slavery. How are we supposed to heal the rift between the races when people keep bringing up ancient history? Until people let it go, we won't! Forgive the sin, but learn from the lesson. My ancestors weren't even here for it- why am I paying the price? No one in my family ever owned a slave. I guess I'm just the bad guy because of what color I am.... naturally there is nothing wrong with making assumptions about people based on their color. Of course not.

No its not. Slavery is and was an evil insitution that destroyed many people's lives. The blacks didn't even to begin to get their rights until the 1960's just 40 years ago. People do need to understand about slavery because it is still the cause of many evils in the us today.
Only racist would mind it still beging taught because they are ashamed what happened and they don't want to own up to how evil the US has been. This evil still exist because it allows us to go to war against non-Christins like the muslims in Iraq..

do people not understand..??..whites still basically have the upper hand..that's y we should continue to teach about slavery..y take something that's a part of our history and hush it up..??..nothing has really changed..slavery i still a part of our lives now days..think about it.. most African Americans live in the inner city caused by restrictions on advancements for colored people because who mostly runs everything..??..white people..the inner city has poor schooling for the children..but the teachers like to say they don't like to sit and learn..there's no connection there because half of the time the teacher is white themselves..how can a person identify with someone who doesn't look like them, and doesn't live like them..??..half of those teachers live in the suburbs and make money off of a different region..they're not putting that money back into that community (i don't know what everyone does) when the kids reach the time to go to college they are too far behind..or they are told by their school counselors that they're not college material..its a system..oppression -->poverty -->lack of education-->jobs like janitors or a fast food restaurant worker..if u don't want to hear schools talking about slavery then don't go to school and then you'll find out what its like to be oppressed and be denied the equal rights that you deserve..

they still talk about slavery because it was a huge issue throughout the world and obviously african americans think white people owe them something and also obvious some white people think that african americans should be put back into slavery, Id say it would be time to let go but we still have discrimination against african americans so there is always a chance that slavery could rise up if enough white people who are racist got on congress or something like that and wanted slavery back and other people agreed with them.

It's a major part of our history that affected everything from society to economy to politics for over 200 years. And even after slavery ended, the repercussios continued to affect our nation for another 100 years, and to a certain extent, we feel those repercussions to this day. If we do not understand our past, we cannot create a better future!
