My friend just learned that his apartment, before he signed his lease, was the site of a very violent crime. In fact, he has discovered pictures of his apartment on the internet about news coverage of the violent crimes. It makes him VERY uncomfortable. He would like to know if he has cause to break his lease since the landlord didn't tell him about what happened before he got there. My guess is he doesn't have a case, but maybe he does? Thanks!!

Your guess is correct. As long as the unit has been properly cleaned and ridded of any evidence of the crime, it need not be disclosed under most state laws. Had he asked about such a situation and the landlord had not replied truthfully, then he would have more of a legal case.

impacted property like that I don't believe is a disclosable issue unless your state laws requires such a disclosure. Your friend's unconfort is one of personal nature, imagine if we all feel that way and we have to be taken to the hospital where all kinds of gruesome deaths occur every day.
