He looked like one in his younger days.

Edit- No Show Jones was skipping a concert to guess what? get drunk and my friend's Grandfather was there drinking with him.

That's a good question. MAYBE because of his alcohol problems early in his career and through out his life, some people thought that it damaged his career in country music to the point of dooming him for good. However, it seems that he was "playing dead" like a possum, maybe till the heat was off.
Just a guess, but it makes sense to me at least. Im sure you'll get a better answer but i had to throw my 2 cents in on this one.

Yes I'm more familiar with why they called him "No Show Jones" for his drunken episodes but I never quite understood the nickname "possum."

Have you looked at George Jones... he looks like an oppossum! But I bet it has more to do with him and his other known title, No-show Jones... when he'd get drunk and was unable to perform, was he sick or just playin' possum?

It's a nickname given to him by his peers, because in his early career he wore a buzz cut and his eyes were always glazed over from substance and it made him look like a possum.

I always heard it was cuz he looked like one in his younger days, but it dont matter to me , cuz he is the voice of country music as far as I'm concerned! I love gEORGE!
