Yes basketball is the worlds second most populkar sport. Courts are popping up all over the world and international players are coming into the NBA at a dizzying rate. This year alone the All Star game featured six internationally born players and the MVPs of both the regular season and the Finals were born outside the US. The game will continue to EXPLODE in popularity around the world so dont be suprised that half the NBA's revenue is generated and players are born outside the US by 2018.
Still the game will never replace soccer as the worlds most popular sport . Basketball requires slightly more equipment then soccer (soccer requires only a ball and a space to play while basketball requires hoops) and so it is not as accesible to the worlds poor. Although basketball is popular because of its simplicity and easy accesibility the rules are slightly harder to understand and the game is slightly more complicated then soccer. Soccer is also very cultural. It has been played in some parts of the world for hundreds if not thousands of years and the games traditions are completely engrained into society the way football and baseball are in the US. Soccer is as much a part of many countries history and culture as anything (that is part of the reason the World enjoys it so much yet it simply wont catch on in the US). Soccer is also a game that conjures a great sense of national pride (one of the most patriotic things you can do is root for your national team) and is a way for nations to prove their suppremacy over eachother. It is also a common thing most people have in common. Quite simply basketball just does not have these kinds of cultural and traditional roots outside the US (come March we Americans may pour over our brackets, but most of the rest of the world does not have a clue what march madness is) and though a large basketball fanbase may be created it will have the popularity soccer does.

NO,cricket with over 2.5 bill fans in indian subcontinent(1,7 bill),australia,uk,south africa makes it 2nd most popular sport followed by rugby with over 1 billion fans in uk,fiji, wales, australia, new zealand, south africa, canada, argentina, france etc.. Basketball is 4th after rugby and cricket with over 920-970 mill fans in china, usa, middle europe.Basketball is not no.2 because its 5th or 4th most popular sport in china after ping pong, soccer, badminton,(volleyball?).But yeah remember basketball is fastest growing sport and if growth of cricket will not increase than it may become 2nd in next 10 years followed by rugby(another fast growing sport)

While I have to agree that basketball comes after soccer internationally, it will never come close to the international popularity of soccer, or futbol. Countries are ten thousand times more crazy about soccer than we are about the superbowl. Soccer will always dominate the international sports world, and I can't see that changing. It has been this way for hundreds of years. Try going to go to a soccer game in England or any country in south america or europe. My friend used to live in England, and her mom wouldn't even let her go to a match when she was a kid. That was common, because it was sooooo crazy. It's so rowdy, that it is not a children's event by any means, like here in America. People take their children to games, but it's not that way everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised if in international popularity of futbol is more than all of the rest of the sports combined. The FIFA World Cup is the most viewed event, even more than the summer olympics.

My guess is, probably not. Soccer is a little more universal because of a slightly lower cost to participate. In other words, all you need is a ball and something to represent goals, and you have a soccer game. Basketball is slightly more complicated, although it's simplicity is a reason for its popularity.
I think basketball will be a solid second indefinitely.

I would probably have to agree with you because no longer does the US dominate like they did like when the Dream Team was around. Granted our best players have no interest to represent the US, but still a lot of other international teams can really play. I think it's most evident in the amount of foreign players entering the NBA in recent years.
Oh, but baseball has more than a few baseball players worldwide though I think it's concentrated in latin america and asia. I'd still say basketball though.

Nothing will surpass soccers supremacy! I think world wide RUGBY has a bigger following than basketball, ice hockey too. Just to name 2 sports off top of my head.

No.
Football is a global phenomenon. Because of its lower emphasis on physical attributes and specific playing facilities, and the availability of televised broadcast of matches, football will always be and remain as the world's premier sport.

uuummmm let me think about that no because soccer is awesome and it is fun and when you are mad at someone it is real easy to take your anger out in the game because you can kick a soccer ball wicked far or play agressive
