"So, counter to stereotypes, there doesn't seem to be evidence that males and females talk at different rates, at least among college students"
The study was of COLLEGE men and women. Therefore the only valid conclusion to be drawn MIGHT be that there is no significant difference in this relatively small segment of the population. It's interesting how many here leap to conclusions about the behavior of men and women as a whole that are not supported by this study.

Who breathes more? Who sleeps more? Who is smarter? The answer is, they are about equal. And the amount people talk depends on the individual, not gender. Also on upbringing, the social situation, who they are with, etc. I am a quiet girl. My bf is very talkative. I also know some boys who barely say anything and some girls who talk your EARS off!! There is a wide extreme, from silent to a complete loudmouth, and both boys or girls can be anywhere on the Loud Scale.
Girls are generally raised to be more quiet and softspoken...at least, in the old days. Now with the whole womens rights thing they are getting conflicting messages: one to be "nice" and one to be "confident." Boys have the same problem: the "strong, silent type" or "don't be a wuss."

Thanks Rio Madeira for the link.
Actually, I had read something like that about the English. The author talked about gossips (not necessarily gossips about celebrity - actually, apparently, it's about people you actually know). In England, gossip is very common. Here's what she says about the differences between men and women who gossip:
Contrary to popular belief, researchers have found that men gossip just as much as women. [...] Men were certainly NO MORE likely than women to discuss "important" or "highbrow" subjects such as politics, work, art and cultural matters - except (and this was a striking difference) when women were present. [...] It is only in mixed-sex groups, where there are women to impress, that the proportion of male conversation time devoted to these more "highbrow" subjects increases dramatically. [...] most English males initially claimed that they did not gossip, while most of the females readily admitted that they did. On further questioning, however, teh difference turned out to be more a matter of semantics than practice: what the women were happy to call "gossip", the men defined as "exchanging information". [...] In my gossiop research, I found that the main difference between male and female gossip is that female gossip actually sounds like gossip. There seems to be three principal factors involved: the tone rule [high-pitched and quick], the detail rule and the feedback rule [response by women is required, whereas men don't do that as that definitely sounds girly]. [etc.]
Of course, this is about the English, but I think it can be generalized to other cultures. I just quoted her because the article provided by Rio Madeira referred to the subjects of conversation.

I'd say the same. I work with all men (masonry) and I was so surprised to see its just like being around a bunch of women. They gossip, talk about each other behind their backs, whine all the time and hardly ever shut up. Same thing as a group of girls do. Wow.

It's impossible to say.
Keep in mind, it is people who define the statistic and not the other way around.
