On a drivers test the examiner is looking for your experience in any driving situation and ability to carry out certain driving techniques.
Parallel parking does require some ability and experience in manoeuvring the car into the parking space. Whereas anyone can turn into the drive through parking spaces...just one of those things that we have to do.

Before I got my license, I practiced parallel parking almost every day for a week. I finally got it down and when I went to take the test, I didn't even have to do it. If I were you, I wouldn't even worry about parallel parking. It depends on your state, but chances are, you won't have to do it.

Parallel parking is rare?
First I've heard of it, I parallel park the car at work, I parallel park the car to use the shops, I do as much parallel parking as any other kind.

They were going to drop that part of the test until a couple of years ago. They decided to leave it in the test just to see if people were able to put there cell phones down for approx. 15 seconds and actually pay attention to there driving. Most couldn't and failed.

Because parallel parking indicates how much control of the car you have, how well you can judge space and distance, and how well you know the length and width of your vehicle, which are all things you will need to know driving.
