The Value of our Critical Faculty

We must check our premises to verify the truth of anything. Conventional wisdom is the result of tradition, therefore is not automatically reliable. Reasoning is reliable when the premise states a fact that can be checked with the evidence of the sense and/or non contradictory logic that is a true fact of reality. From the premise we proceed to classify other concepts as similar or different in order to reach a conclusion which is equally demonstrable as the premise. All wisdom is based on reasoning.

If I state that 2 + 3 = 5 and demonstrate this premise to be a fact, then I can discover that 3 and 2 is also 5; or that 5 - 3 is 2; and so on. These are conclusions equally demonstrable.

If I say that the world is 6000 years old. I must check this premise with evidence before I can proceed to rely on it as a fact.

If "Conventional Wisdom" tells me that "only two things in life are unavoidable: death and taxes" I should check carefully if that premise hasn't been repeated so much it is simply a subliminal message that appeals to the emotions, therefore to be believed without question and without proper examination from our critical faculty.

Conventional wisdom can hold some important pieces of truth so should always be looked at. However, some amazing fallacies also show up in conventional wisdom. The seeker must look for the truth, no matter where it comes from, and do their best to separate truth from fiction. Only through challenging every belief can we eventually arrive at true wisdom and knowledge.

If One questions conventional wisdom, then we must question Society. And if One relies on Tradition, then one must question its tradition if it was through conventional teachings.

If One feels that it is true? Then it will always be true, until he/she sees it in another perspective. There is only one truth. The words that leads me to believe.

We must remember that Wisdom is much different than Knowledge. To know one is to not know the other until we learn both. That is the truth my friends.

I don't agree with the use of the word, 'must'. Otherwise, I think your question suggests you are onto something.

There are plenty of reasons to believe a lot of the human population isn't marching in step with your musthood.
