There are several.
1. The ears of an african elephant are larger, thinner, and have a shape that is actually similar to that of the continent of africa. This is due to the hotter climate...they fan the ears which cools blood in the large veins that are right near the surface due to the thinness.
2. The heads of an asian elephant have a sort of dual dome shape. When you look dead on, you will so the top of their head is sort of like a really soft heart shape. African elphants only have one dome to their forehead.
3. In asian elephants, the trunk has one "lip" of a sort that they can actually curl and use to help grasp things. African elephants actually have two.
4. African elephants are taller and larger than asian elephants.
5. The backs of asian elephants have a gentle upward slope while african elephants have a slight downward slope...sort of like a dip in their back.

One difference is in ear size. The African elephant has bigger ears than the Indian elephant.

African elephants are bigger and they are gray......Indian elephants are smaller and seem almost brown. My favorite animals elephants and the African elephant is at the top of he list. They are so beautiful and gracious. Elephants are so smart and have the same mentality of humans it's not even funny. They are just so wonderful wherever they are from..

Aside from having bigger ears, the African elephant is not as docile as the Indian. In the original movie, Tarzan, they have big ears tacked onto Indian elephants, because they are not so wild.

The African elephant has bigger ears and the females are known to have tusks like the males although significantly smaller. The Asian(Indian) elephant has smaller ears and the females do NOT have tusks.
