Alright, Gina! You tell 'em. Nit wits, they definitely are...

Neons, cory catfish, pencil fish, white clouds and zebra danios are just a few. All are schooling fish, though, and should have about 4-5 friends to swim with. Yes, even the cory catfish are schooling fish.

I keep bettas in community tanks so I'm not one of those nitwits....

But I'm gonna say you shouldn't put another fish in with your betta. Not because a betta's too aggressive, but because 5 gallons just isn't much space to share. The only fish small enough without being too long-finned (guppies) or messy (platies) are all schooling fish that would need to be kept in groups too large for that tank, even without the betta.

Consider a dwarf frog or two, or a bamboo shrimp, or a handful of ghost shrimp. They're fascinating little things. I love watching mine swim around the tank. Nerite snails are actually very active for snails, won't outgrow a 5 gallon like mystery/apple snails, and are the BEST algae eaters I've found.

(Technically you could throw in just two or three neons or one or two cories, and you'll scoff at this advice because they'll probably be just fine for a while. But their behavior will NOT be what it would be in their groups -- both will spend most of their time hiding. It's likely they'll die at earlier ages than they could if they felt secure.)

Edit to Add: Don't use danios of any kind. They're too nippy and fast-swimming to keep with bettas. Your betta would suffer for it.

Bettas are terrible monsters that will kill any other fish in the tank! Don't do it!! ROFL... I couldn't resist.

Ditto to you and to 8 in the corner.

Another fish to consider would be most any killifish
