I totally agree. We are sickened with the constant bombardment. Each of us needs to find a way to turn it off or tune it out. I was reading about a recent study that asked the participants to rate the 10 most stressful things in their lives (on a day to day basis). The stressor that was 3rd on the list was the nightly news.

I try to watch movies without commercial interruptions, watch programs that feed by brain or soul and read books or find an artistic outlet like painting. Life is too short to pollute your mind with junk. We stayed in a cabin next to the east gate of Yellowstone recently. No T.V., just the sound of a river flowing a few yards from our front door. It was heavenly. We should all take an information vacation every now and then. As Albert Camus said, live deep instead of fast.

You hit the nail on the head with this. I have been thinking about this a lot lately because I keep hearing people say how busy they are and when I ask "doing what?" they say they don't know, just busy. I do think people feel this need for constant entertainment. A lot of times I catch myself watching TV and I absolutely can't stand what I'm watching. Most of it is stupid anyway. So I started getting movies out of the library and instead of watching something dumb on TV I watch a movie. I like to read. I started not turning the TV on a couple of nights a week and settled back into reading.

You are right on. Who do you blame, the media or the people? We need entertainment, but we need more information about what is happening in the world. Reading is fine, but sometimes it just takes to much time to capture the important kernels of facts. Also, books are written a long time after the facts. So, for quick and honest news we need a responsible media. Also an educated audience who tell the difference between the truth and spin.

If only people would! It's like an addiction, & they seem to believe everything credible or not. Of course I agree! The only thing I watch on TV is CSpan, (from the horse's mouths if one can even believe THEM.) I get alerts online, only those that interest me. Someone said the media "preys" on people; I don't think so. I think they "feed" what the majority of people want. I love to read, too, but only really get a chance when I go to bed. As for thinking for ourselves about things that impact us, we can research CREDIBLE sources. What % of people do you think do this?

I agree we must think for ourselves. If we don't we might as well be a clone drone robot of the evil empire. They have taught us not to think for ourselves and to follow the pack. Well to be a leader we must think of our own ideas and rules. If we don't stand up for ourselves we're just a knock over waste of space. Anyone can follow but it takes a true man to lead.

Its an easy habit, at least for me, to fall into. After the rush of work, kids, and husband, I fall into just distracting my mind with the inane product offered by the media. I have to remind myself that if I keep putting crap into my mind, that's all it will produce...so I make sure I remove myself from it for more intellectual stimuli.

Media is largely responsible for the community conscious and opinion. The power they weild over us cannot be underestimated.
I 've always wondered about a position high in the government like, "Socio-Engineer"... someone who collectively guides the direction of the Nations thoughts. You can bet with our government such a position exists. (black-ops surely)

I so agree! We watch movies vs. reading an actual book or picking up a magazine like Time or National Geographic which in the end are more more rewarding as well a opening our eyes to the issues that surround us.I must say that some movies are good to watch yet too much TV and mags put us in this bubble with wanting us to see and reading stupid things vs. what we want.what happened to the people picking up a good book for relaxation or to clear their head when it is a hard day or when it rains outside? My sister, myself as well as my family are huge fans of books and every time my sister and i visit Barnes and Noble we leave with a good book in our hands:be it Shakepeare's greatest works,Alexander Duma's great stories or something that we do not own and want to read.We as a society are more interested in what stupid people such as Paris Hilton do and waste our life reading about them vs. having a life! I call that stupidity on our behalf because we as a nation suck when it comes to education and we wonder why! There are video games, computer games, etc to keep us and our kids pre-occupied therefore we lose track of what is important to us by being so materialistic. We need to read to open our eyes to new ideas and discover the issues that surround us or just to enjoy a good book!i love books because they are something that are pleasand, something that you can actually have a discussion about with other people who actually give a damn.also the people who read the most are those who are in college and who need to know almost everything, people like myself who is about to get her teaching degree in History for 8-12th grade and i as a person have to read in my own spare time about events, dates and what else has occured since they keep me informed and sane.if we as people actually cared and gave a damn about what is going on and read the book vs. the movie we would be better off..Plus we are lazy to really give a damn!no offense to anyone

Lol, you make it sound like everyone believes what the media says. 1. Media will contradict itself (different stations with different views) 2. there are a ton of those anti-society/culture/media people who intentialy don't do acts of them, or sometimes do the complete opposite. The list goes on and on...

We have to learn to chose between two best things.I love books and I feel that it is far better to read than to browse internet.I have learned that after months of crazy browsing.I couldn't see any development in me and noe I read most of the time.
