the reason i ask for american responses is that they seem to have no trouble showing thier natinal pride in fact its almost second nature! the english are often portrayed as the baddies in many hollywood films while the scots, irish and welsh are seen as the nicer nations of the uk. do americans really think that way?

I am in US. I think that the Brits are very intelligent, refined and speak with a much better vocabulary. At least Tony Blair does. All the English actors have excellent elocution and when I see a film with Kenneth Branagh or Emma Thompson that is so vividly clear. Im not sure what you are referring to with your question but I had just said yesterday I dont know why we had to have the Revolutionary war to celebrate July 4 since we should have just stayed with the Brits.!

Why would we feel that way about the English. We are , in many respects virtually alike in wants needs, desires and interests.

I see nasty comments from both sides on Yahoo and think the whole thing is silly. The UK, British, English may not like our politics but we don't understand theirs either. We have been allies a very long time and courteous exchanges actually are very interesting. It's when either side starts bashing that the whole point of questions and answers is moot.

I've never been to the UK but someday would like to go. I'm not totally retired so I guess it will be awhile longer. Both our countries and pretty much every country has something to be proud of. It is just by whose perspective.

They are just the same as us. The average Joe/Jane usually share the same ideals universally in every, essentially, free country.

I've never been to Britain, but I know british/english people are very polite. The only contact I've had with British people were my two cousins.

That is a reflection on you. No one can make you feel anything. Be proud if you want to be proud but don't put it on me that you're not.
