We're human, we want to survive. I believe this to be something we're born with. We learn how to kill better as we grow. If we're sadistic, we know how to inflict pain on another human that will ensue a slow torturous death. If we're compassionate, we know ways to lessen the pain as much as possible to end their life. The potential is always there, if you're looking.
Interesting question. Thanks for asking.

The ability to kill is more to do with how picking on the weak members of society seems like a better option than picking on the stronger members. It is an inborn ability and it is natural to want to find an easy way to loose frustration, this is also called a scape goat, but killing is a silly way out of an argument becasue as Donne said "No man is an island". So make argements discussions and premote the idea of peace.

During WW2, the military realised than only 40% of soldiers were actually shooting at each other.
The other 60% were petrified in fear, panicked and ran off or shot in the air.
Humans have something in their mind, a natural reticense at killing each other, as amazing as it may sound.
One can kill by accident in a fight, or volontarly in fury or revenge, but it takes a lot to go and kill a perfect stranger, even on a battlefield.
Since then, the military, throught "improved" training, has tried to remove this avertion at killing and mechanise the act of taking someone's life.
A pilot pressing a button thousands of feet in the air, just pushes a button, he doesn't see or smell the people on the ground burning and being blown up.

I certainly believe that we all have the ability and the potential to kill others but what stops (most of) us from doing it is the way we are trained.

Those who are taught to value and respect life, to love humanity, to forgive, to understand, and above all, to exercise control over their emotions, look on killing for anything other than self-defence as an aberration.

So you could say that nature gives the ability to kill but nurture stops us from using that ability.

The first out of countless instances that comes to my mind is the remarkable depiction of human nature, in its most lurid form, by William Golding in his novel Lord of the Flies, which you may have read already. Then there is the biblical story of Cain and Abel; the ability to kill, in my view, is instinctive and natural to man, only check by greater fears, and concerns more refined and civilised in the mind.

The human nature is not just purposeful, or merely based upon noble reason of living, it instead is very ambitious, strongly critical of others and brutal in the matters of survival. With ambition come fear and with instinct for survival come violence. And the both attributes in human nature become the prime motives, or the reasons, to carry out brutal act against others - it is, for instance, reasonable, and even wise, to uproot a potential threat, or to attack and kill an enemy before it does that same to you.

potential - yes.....ability - no!
We're all born with the potential to kill, like it's possible for anyone to actually carry out the action. Now whether an individual could actually go ahead & do it, is another question entirely.

Living with the consequenses is another matter as well.....Living with it is more to do with the effect on the conscience really.

Yes, you are born with the ability to kill. A falling infant could probably exert enough force to break you xiphoid process and kill you, or hit any other lethal point on the body.

Killing is something we do when we begin following ideals. Any ideal will eventually cause killing by causing the frustrations of failure and the resulting hurtful treatment of others who then mature to be even more hurtful.
