Neutral safety switch is bad or out of alignment---if you can start the car while moving the shifter or if the shifter's in neutral, then it's a bad N.S. switch---replace the switch or have it re-aligned.

Will your car start in Neutral? (N) It the car starts in neutral and can be shifted to R, D, Lo, and the engine keeps running, and the car drives normally with automatic shifting taking place, check to see that the Quadrand Selector is correctly adjusted to enable voltage to pass thru the Start position of the Selector. Sometimes you can push or pull on the quadrant Selector and make contact with the Selector in Start position. A slight shift of the electrical shift board will often allow the car to start every time in PARK. Otherwise you may have to buy another shift board.

If it starts in Neutral, you need a mount somewhere, the powertrain unit (eng & trans) has shifted, thus telling your shifter that it's in Reverse when you have it in Park. Your Neutral Safety Switch would then be saving your life.
