I'm going to a summer camp where I will be doing water activities every day. When I get my period, how should I tell the male coach. There are no other female coaches there. My mom wrote me a letter that says I cannot swim. But I'm afraid theat might not cut it. What should I say?

My mom is strictly against tampons. She never bought one or used one. She hates them. In addition, when my period comes she will be traveling.

If I miss two days of camp, I am immediately withdrawn from the program.

A lot of the girls there think that it's okay to wear a pad in water. But we are doing water activities like kayaking, sailing, and canoeing.

don't say anything; buy tampons. Theyre safe in water and as long as its not your heaviest day it should be fine. change them often! but don't worry, should the need arise, the male coach knows all about periods and will understand.

Also, it tends to lighten up quite a bit in the water (period).
I agree that tampons would be the best choice. And since you are a new user, get the skinniest kind that you can for comfort (ex. junior, slender). If your mom is uncomfortable with them, maybe there is another older female that can take you to buy some and walk you through this. Plenty of us have had to swim while on our periods. It will be alright! , I would try to go with the note (and if any of the other kids ask and you want to maintain your privacy just tell them that you have an ear infection and you aren't allowed to swim. Not to encourage you to lie, but I know how kids can be. If he does not accept the note, then go with the tampon idea mentioned.

uh, ok, just because your mom doesn't like tampons doesn't mean they won't work for you. i suggest going to the store, or getting a friend's mom to get some for you. wearing a pad in the water is not gonna work. it'll be obvious you wearing one. your mom sounds like one of those old fashioned ladies that thinks tampons will take away your virginity. you won't have any fun if you don't get to swim, so i say get yourself a box of O.B. tampons and makeup case to hide them in from your mother and go swimming. don't worry about telling a male coach you're on your period. if anything, it would embarrass him more than you and if he knows that there are going to be a bunch of girls at this camp then he's probably fully aware that people will be having their periods.

Use a tampon. You can go to various tampon sites for information on how to use them, how safe they are, etc.
You can also ask your doctor for advice on which ones to use, or if you're nervous. I was at first, but I swim competitivley, and needed them. It's very easy after a few times. Practice before you actually need them, though.
If you aren't comfortable, remeber that guys get the same sex ed girls do. Tell him you have a problem, and give him a look, either exasperated, embarrased, or "well?". Or just say that its for girl reasons. He'll get the idea.

In most matters I back the mom, but in this matter she is out-of-date and old-fashioned. Buy some of the extra slender tampons and try them when you have plenty of time to experiment. It takes a few tries before you get it right. Then you can do any kind of water sport with no worries whatsoever.

The note should be fnie but trust me - you are not the first girl these male coaches have coached. They know all about this stuff and shouldn't have any issues. If they wonder why you ahve the note, just tell them in a private area that you are having female issues and that will clue them in.

if your mom seriously wont let u wear tampons. (they are not that bad, i just think it might leak on normal days or what if it didnt come out? so i dont wear them in public places)
you could tell the couch u dont feel good, or are there female nurses there? if u really cant do anything just wear pads, my friends did that once, and i did too, its better than not wearing anything, what if you write a note saying you are sick and cant go to camp? are they still gonna kick you out?

if you have a note from your mum, that will cut it i asure you!
you are worrying about a problem that will most lilky not happen, you have a note, the coach while being a man is not a total idiot and will respect your mothers wishes, this is supper camp not school they wont force you!
however should such situation arise, just say no i wont!, if he asks why then just tell him the truth, he will understand. if you dont want to tell him dont, just say no and tell him to ring your mum.
no one can physically force you into the water

Have your mom take you to the doctor before you go to camp and he can give you a shot that will keep your period from coming that month. It won't hurt you and you will have no problems to deal with!

well for gym i always skip class. ( shouldn't do that) but you could always buy tampons without your mother knowing cause that's what i do if its hot out cause my moms against them also. or you could ask a camp mate for them the nurse at the camp prob has them. or Just play sick and say you have the chills if that doesn't work crying prob will then they will think your very sick. good luck :)
