What would be the best way to try to get into mechanics...im not planning on it being my occupation but i want to be able to work on my own cars and what not. I really havent had any mechanicall knowledge in my life so im pretty much fresh out the whomb(sp?) on this one. Should i start with getting some sort of manuall or should i try to contact a local colleges(im 16 so i dunno if i can take any of their classes) or should i try to contact a garage and ask around for help? Im not exspecting it to be easy. I have the motivation im always under my hood looking at everything(never tried taking anything apart befor) also it would probbly be good idea for me to start on something not as exspensive maybe like a lawn mower. Right? Any help is appreciated.

Start talking to your teachers in school this fall. If your school has an auto shop or ag classes, those are great places to start. Also take to a local mechanic and see if they will let you with an apprenticeship to learn the trade.

Good luck

Read, read, read---local libraries, book stores, parts stores, school library....anything you can get your hands on---with illustrations is better, try to find books that explain the basic functions of automobile components and systems --- and try some simple repairs or start on something like you said---a lawnmower, minibike, cycle. Maybe get a part-time job at a shop or garage and get to know some of the mechanics and learn from them. See if your high school has a tech program. Tech colleges sometims have pre-admission courses for students in high school yet. Good luck, Paul

go to your local community college and see if they offer any mechanic classes. If they don't, ask them what community college does... this is the least expensive way to learn..., and besides, you may kill 2 birds with one stone, extra credit...
