My PC was infected by a virus few days ago and all the anti-viruses weren't able to eliminate the problem, they find viruses and trojan horses and delete them , but each time I restart or scan again .. they appear again ... so I though to format the hard disk ... but when I boot from the Windows xp sp2 cd, it starts loading the different drivers and stuff .. but just before the setup window appears ( the one from which you choose to recover, format or partition ) I get this error message :
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer"
what can I do?

See if you can come up in safe mode by pressing F8 during bootup. Then run your virus scans in safe mode. It sounds like the viruses are reinstalling themselves but if you get rid of them in safe mode they should be gone for good. Also, if that does not work , come up in safe mode and do a system restore to an earlier time before you had the problem. In fact maybe you should try this first since it would be easier.

I've had a similar problem with XP whereby I wasn't able to reformat or anything from the CD.

My solution was to use a little program called Killdisk. It will destroy anything and everything on your hard drive. It's a slow process to run but it does clean up "nasty" hard drives. It's best to start it up and let it run overnight.

If you were going to reformat anyway it's an option. You can either let it rewrite your entire HD or you can simply let it run for about 15 minutes to destroy the boot portions of XP.

Once you do that, XP will reformat your HD and you should have no problem reinstalling XP from scratch.

Killdisk is available at http://www.download.com All you need to do is copy it to floppy or CD and boot up the computer with it in the appropriate drive.

Hope this helps.

The only way to re-format your hard drive is to boot off of another disk or CD. I suggest getting a friend to download the ultimate boot cd and then there are many utilities that you can use to re-format your drive.
If you are a little more computer literate then download the Knoppix Linux CD and use that.
You should be able to boot from the Windows install CD and reformat from that too.

disable system restore and try scanning your pc again it will remove the virus permanently....the reason it keeps coming back is because the virus copied itself into the system restore files

first schedule a bootup scan in your antivirus software

then goto control panel>system>system restore tab

there you can disable system restore

then reboot (your pc will then scan your pc during boot up and remove any traces of the virus safely before finishing its bootup stage)
