My friend is pregnant and is not eligiable for medicaid because of her boyfriends income. Are there any other programs available for someone in this situation to help with medical bills?

Have her check with her hospital. They offer private pay discounts which can be very good. Her OB/GYN may offer the same thing. Walgreens has their own plan for uninsured people. When I was without insurance last yr due to a job change my RXs were VERY low at Walgreens. When insurance made me pay 12 bucks for an antibiotic, Walgreens plan was 2! *** EVEN if she says she does not live with teh BF, if she gave/gives his name, they will come after him for the bill! I KNOW from experience.

Depends on your state. Last year, our state started offering maternity insurance for women who otherwise had none. It is about $85 a month which is affordable.

If the boyfriend can get insurance at his work and marries her, she will likely be covered. They can't exclude new family members for pre-existing conditions.

Another poster said that boyfriend should move out so that she qualifies for Medicaid. I don't think it's reasonable to stick taxpayers with your maternity costs, do you? She should contact Planned Parenthood and find out about low-cost pregnancy care. Also, maybe she wants to have a midwife instead of an OB. The cost is often 1/3 less. Find out from hospital how you can save money and know that they will help you with a payment plan.

She needs to not live with the boyfriend and get Medicaid. There is no one else who helps people in that situation, unless she can get the attention of some welltodo sorts.... Please have her reconsider her living situation and then she won't have to claim the boyfriend who may or may not be with her later on anyway.

Can't the WIC people get her on something called "Healthy Start?" That would take into account the boyfriend's income and unless he's making about 50k or something, she's eligible.

try a website called http://www.maternitycard.com, they help lower your doctor and hospital bills a considerable amount by up to 60% so that should help her a lot. She should also try again for medicaid, if she isn't married then her boyfriends income should not matter just her income.

It cheats the system, and I refused to do it because we weren't totally desperate, Buuuut...she can say she's single and not living with her boyfriend, then apply for medicaid on her own for herself and the baby with her sole income. It worked for a lot of the girls I work with. (and i think i would have done it if we were totally desperate, but luckly we survive)

Her boyfriends income should not matter unless they are married. You need to tell her to go back and tell the people she lives alone, and has no income.
