The Intel Quad Core is the best processor right now. The Intel Core 2 Duo is the next best processor. AMD dual core processor is cheaper but it's performance is way behind the core 2 duo from Intel. The CPU chart can be found here : http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html

Intel Core2Duo (C2D) is the best (generally fastest) but expensive
AMD Turion x2 is still great and a lot cheaper
Depends on what u need it for, standard things, go for the AMD for the price breaks, anything top end, has to be the C2D

the amd x2 is the fastest processor period .. when the fx 62 came out it was the fastest and amd still holds the record.
