Go talk to your local radio station. They are always looking for part-time people. That way, you can get some "on the job" training to learn how to use the equipment and keep your real job. Then you can decide if it is a career for you! Remember that radio is a business. It seems like it would be really fun but it is like any other business with budgets, cost cutting, etc.

Listen to the station. Find out when they are going to be out at a bar, store, etc. Bar usually works better. Kiss much *** of whomever the DJ is that night. Get some names of the PD, the production people, the people in charge of hiring, they are usually pretty helpful if you just come out and say "who can i talk to at your station to get into this". In radio you need one of 2 things: 1)be really good at what you do, or 2)know someone in a position to help you. Have you ever DJ'd a party? Hosted any events? Done any promotional stuff?
if you dont want to kiss butt do what the other guy said, demo, etc etc

My advice is to apply to the stations in your market for a PT on air position... it's a good way to decide if you like the work, and not just the idea of being on the radio. (sorry to be harsh) Be ready to do a lot of grunt work... as low man on the totem pole you'll get the shifts no one else wants. early morning on saturday and sunday or friday and saturday nights if they don't voice track.

Put together a demo CD and send it out with your resumes. A great approach is to call the program director of a particular station you want to join and offer to be the "fill in guy" for when folks are on vacation and use that as a "trial period". I have a lot of co-workers who broke in that way. Good luck.
