"The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," by Betty Edwards. My art teacher in high school SWORE by the book, especially for those of us who were more inclined toward stick figures. ;) She always told us "EVERYONE can draw," and would offer this book up as a way to do so.

Hope this helps!

Sarah, there are so many books on how to draw people I couldn't begin to say which is best. Go to the library for a start, before you buy any. Take a look at what the author says, how the books are laid out, and what sounds good to you.

After you are sure, or at least better informed, then go buy one. If you want the exact book you found in the library, go to alibris.com, or other online book seller, and see if you can find it used for less.

One hint I'll give you is: study people carefully. Learning to do art is learning to see, literally. Study the shadows, see how fabric drapes. Draw everyday. Draw people you know so you can draw them frequently and see how you can and have improved. Save and date each sketch you do. Using charcoal is about the easiest to sketch with.

You can take beginning drawing classes at local community colleges. Also, many artists of a variety of skill levels will meet at mutually agreed upon places and hire a model to pose for them. You show up and put around $10 in the basket (or what ever they put the pot in) and sketch away. After a while, stop and go look at the work others are doing. Ask how they do this or that, or just watch them work. That's the standard of upper division, and sometimes lower division classes, so it's expected you will do it.

Hi Sarah,
There are different ways to do it well, and you may have to try several and see what works well for you. You get out of it what you put into it.Here is the results I get:

Here is a link to my tutorial on the internet:

Just go to messages, and then to "messages" and then "art theory", and "a simple connect the dot face". Just go to the beginning of the thread. I've gotten a lot of really great compliments on this tutorial, and some really mean hate mail too. Some artists hate this approach, or they don't like the idea of people who didn't study at a University competing with them. You have to work with your own learning style and see what works for you, and remember that you can do it any way that works.
