If its to check for pregnancy why don't they just ask, "is it possible that you are pregnant?"

"nope my husband and i changed sexes and he's the one who has pms go ask him!

Being a woman, checking the status of your period is part of taking your vital signs. It can indicate whether you're pregnant, menopausal, pre-pubescent, and possibly help the doctor in diagnosing certain conditions.

Several reasons - if you are pregnant, they can't give you certain medications or take an x-ray. Also, period irregularities are a big health sign with women - i.e. it could mean you are anemic which could cause problems with bleeding if you needed stiches, etc.

Well because a womans menstral cycle has alot to do with how healthy a woman is...but mostly because they dont want to take any chance that you could be pregant and they give you medicne or xrays that could harm the baby....

B/c it's part of their medical evaluation, and if there is a medical emergency, they can reference your medical charts to better understand the situation.
