How much faster will my rendering speeds for 3d be if I upgrade my system from a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz processor with 1 gb of memory to a Pentium Quad Core 2.4 ghz processor with 4 gb of memory.

This is not rendering for games but for programs like AutoCAD, 3dmax, Cinema 4d etc.

Don't expect too much. 3D rendering is offloaded to the GPU. Do you know why no software rendering is done in games? It's slooooow. Very slow. Besides, it's your GPU that needs to support the DirectX/OpenGL APIs. You could have an amazing processor, but if you don't have a GPU that is up to snuff, some games can't even run (they can't access parts of the API that the GPU allows).

Your biggest gain is going to come from the fact that your rendering can now use a different core to the rest of a program. I agree with csanon, it isn't certain to be a great deal faster. Definitely not 80x.

Extra RAM on you graphics card would make a lot more difference than on your CPU. Having 4 cores isn't going to make as much difference as you might think. Most software renders in a single thread (on one core).

In fact most software is written for a single core. Games are the most common users of multiple threads. 3DS Max does use multiple threads and I suspect that AutoCAD will too.

it depends on alot of factors but it should be a minimum of 4x faster. when rendering a movie its better to have 3 1ghz computers processing than a 1 3ghz computer. you can make a server of 8 or so old computers cheaper than you can buy that quad core. just link all the computers together via a network and build/buy a storage cabinet for them.

the difference will be night and day. also make sure if ur doin 3d rendering that u have a powerful video card, such as the nvidia 8800, or ati x2900. both of which are dx10 supported

in case you have a great application that can render video clips using the GPU which would be speedier, yet you choose a highend video card with a extensive form of flow processing units. in case you opt to play video games additionally, a sparkling video card would be cool, in case you no longer a core2quad processor can do the pastime.
