this is because the microphone playback is muted. you must unmute it.

you must have your mic plugged in.
1. double click the volume icon in your system tray (bottom right hand corner). this will bring up the sound settings.
2. look for microphone.
3. if it isn't there click options, properties and check the microphone box.
4. now that microphone level is shown, uncheck the 'mute' one the microphone box.

now it should work.

The professors answer is the best answer so far. If you try to get your speakers to re-amplify your voice, you will create a feedback loop which will override the amplifier system on your sound card and possibly damage it. Have you ever been to an event where the speaker system starts to make a loud shrill tone? ...and it keeps getting louder and louder till someone turns it off? Well they got the microphone too close to the speakers and created a feedback loop. Feedback can do serious damage by overloading your sound system. The best way to use your computer as a PA system is to connect a separate larger amplifier system to your output earphone jacks on your computer. Then CRANK IT! ...by the by, if you're just trying to make your voice come out of the speakers, then all you gotta do is turn on the microphone, which is usually by default, on mute. beware, though you will have to turn down the volume first or you'll get that feedback loop I was mentioning. Happy experimenting!

Well, you'll have to have some pretty beefy speakers. You're better off getting an amp or two and hooking up a microphone to them to project your voice.
