You're right in that crabs can live in pubic hair. But if you're worried about getting crabs, you need to think about how many partners you have and how well you know them. Sex will be more fulfilling if it's with someone you've taken the time to get to know.
Aside from the issue of crabs, I don't think it matters if you have pubic hair or not.

The only benefits to humans of having pubic hair, according to what I have read, is to cusion the sensitive areas to some extent, and as an attractant to the opposite sex. However, the cushioning benefit is minimal and some people find the absence of pubic hair to be more attractive. Many people of both sexes completely remove the pubic hair from their genital areas and do just fine. Of course, if you do decide to do that remember that doing so can cause a lot of itching and chaffing, so you will have to continually take care of that area.
Pubic hair does NOT protect you from STD's. On the contrary, as you pointed out, although it does not cause crabs, it can help the organisms that cause diseases like crabs and lice to survive.

Pubic hair does not protect against STDs. It does, however, protect against skin infections, especially the fungal ones that cause redness, soreness, itching and bad odor. Usually these infections go away when the hair grows back, but some bacterial skin infections that shaving encourages can be very hard to get rid of.

Pubic hair has NEVER reduced or stopped STDs, you can get craps on a toilet seat or out of the other person's body hair or the hair on their head, so be careful, wear condoms for protection

Not STDs but some types of bacteria. And technically crabs aren't an STD.

I agree with DuggerA. Pubic hair isn't really needed. Some people shave it, others keep it.

Hay Man, I am a 27 Y.O. Man, and one day I decided to shave my pubic hair off! First, get some electric hair trimmers to shave the majority off first. Then, use shave cream & razor. And Yes, even on your balls!

It doesn't really help reduce STD's. What it does help prevent--especially in females--is bracteria to some degree.
