"The data suggest that women spoke on average 16,215 words and men 15,669 words over an assumed period of, on average, 17 waking hours," the researchers wrote.

Mehl's team tested this belief by recruiting 396 U.S. and Mexican college students who wore a personal digital assistant with a recorder for anywhere between two and 10 days.

I read the story too. Unscientifically, based on your own experience, do you buy it?

I DO believe the numbers - because they represent the ENTIRE population (or at least enough people to give a very good idea)...

It has been my experiece that women either talk a LOT, or hardly at all - there is not a whole lot of middle ground. Either they are up around 30,000 words (the "chatty" ones), or down around 1,000 (the "shy and nervous" ones).

As for us guys - we cover all areas on a pretty much equal basis. Guys like me fall to the lower end of the scale, while someone who might be more of a "pick-up artist" probably falls around the 25,000 mark ;););)
