of course it can be a side effect. Nicotine is a stimulant, and without it in your system any longer it will take a while for your bowels to become accustomed to doing with out it. The best way to avoid constipation during smoking cessation is to take a stool softener and drink at least two liters of water a day.

No, the usual side effect is diarrhea. Nicotine is a nerve poison, and when you take it out of the body, sometimes the nerves overreact and you get diarrhea. But any big change in your habits can cause problems. Just make sure you are drinking enough liquids, and if you need to, start taking one of those fiber laxatives for help.
