An Isomer is prefixed... i-C5H12
Normal pentane is n-C5H12 .. it is NOT an isomer.
Normal is straight chain.
CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH3
Iso is branch chain.
There are 2 Isomers.
1....Methyl-butane (no need for numbers because the CH3 branch can only come of No.2 carbon from either end).
Iso-Pentane … i-C5H12 (Methyl-butane)
CH3-CH-CH2-CH3
..........|
........CH3
2....Di-methylpropane. Again, no need for numbers, as the two CH3's can only come off the middle carbon.
Iso-Pentane… i-C5H12
.......CH3
….....|
CH3-C=C-CH3
..........|
.........CH3
How on earth is normal the same as iso...???

Just been told by my teacher that there are 5 - but I can only think of 3. 2-methylbutane, 2,2-dimethylpentane and 2-ethylpentane. But those could be wrong...

Four carbons and one branch by symmetry.
Three carbons, one possibility by symmetry.
That's it - three
