No, you may not keep it; it's a wild animal under the conservation law in your state and you do not have the proper license to keep it. You must call a licensed wildlife re-habilitator and turn the creature over to him immediately. You find out who that is by contacting your veterinarian.
Remember that you can be found by the law through your on-line activity - including posting to Yahoo Answers. And I'm calling the sheriff on you.

You say you are experienced in taking care of wild animals..yet you are here asking what to do!!! It is illegal to raise wild animals no matter where you live...does'nt matter if you live on a farm! You need to get this animal to a wildlife rehab....it will die on gatorade!! You said you found it...then you say your neighbor gave it to you...which is IT? Sounds to me like you a breaking the law and are going to end up killing an innocent animal because you are inexperienced and uneducated. PLEASE get this animal to a rehab for it's only chance of survival.

I hate to say that you shouldn't do that, but the animal could be rabid. Although opposum rabies is rarer than rabies in other animals, like raccoons, it does happen. Also, if the mother abandoned it, there may be a reason. They can tell things that we can't, and it may be very sick.

I stay in Texas and right here this is prohibited to have a wild animal on your care, so in case you like to maintain this is careful who you ask. i could think of it may be ultimate to circulate to the puppy shop and get some kitten milk i think of this is observed as KMR and a syringe.
