Opinion polls are carefully done and tabulated because the companies doing the polls make more money when they are proven accurate.
.
Basically, politicians are supposed to do the public good in a good way and represent all of the people all of the time.
A lot of politicians however only pretend to listen, and really only answer to the big money interests.
.
Take for instance the present fool in the white house.
The Vast majority of the American people are way ahead of both Bush and Congress on ethics, campaign reform and the stupid war in Iraq.
But the pols aren't listening to the polls!

No. Opinion polls can be very inaccurate -- look at the polls after the 2000 election!
Policymakers SHOULD listen to the phone calls and letters from those they were elected to represent as those will provide a more accurate viewpoint from their district.

No. Opinion polls are taken from only a very small slice of the population and could be opposite to what a majority of people actually think.
There should never be public opinion polls on ANYTHING. Opinions, as you well know, are like "anal orifices"...and usually produce the same by-product.

"Polls" are generally biased and inaccurate. However, listening to the will of the people is something completely different. Politicians need to get out and talk to their constituents, but also, constituents need to let their leaders know where they stand on issues. If you don't tell your leaders, they won't know how to represent you. That is your civic duty, just like voting.

No. Because most people have no idea about legislation and despite this fact will attempt to answer the poll. Take a look at this site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallic_Metals_Act
