I would never answer a serious question like this with anything corny.

Perhaps somewhere in your subconscious, you believe that other people's happiness takes attention away from you. Could it be that you thrive on others' misfortune because it makes you feel more successful and therefore triumphant and powerful over them?
In college, our Psych instructor taught us about these types of human behavior, and it's more common for people to feel this way if they're naturally competitive with their siblings, or when they have no siblings at all....they crave the spotlight and the attention, so when someone else is sad, it kind of makes you look better. That doesn't necessarily make you a bad person, it's just a facet of human nature.

I used to be the same way. For me, it was because I was severely emotionally abused growing up, and was taught not to EVER express a negative emotion. Crying is cathartic, and the only way I could cry was to see someone else suffer; I couldn't cry for myself. I sought out people in distress, so that I could feel THEIR emotion and thereby indirectly experience my own.

If you feel there's something wrong with you, please seek professional help. My guess is that either you're recognizing something in yourself that you deem unacceptable and need coaching in getting rid of that something, or you have a false perception of yourself that a professional can help you overcome.

It feeds a need inside of you. You have accepted this and this shows a great deal of insight. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this AS LONG AS YOU DO NOTHING TO CAUSE HARM TO ANYONE. So go on and keep it to yourself to prevent others from harming you.
