The look in my aunt's eye when she realized that I was giving to her the Bible my mother's parents gave her (my mother) when she turned 7. My aunt and my mom had been best friends growing up and married brothers, so they were best friends AND sisters. My mom died in the '70s.
The Bible, for me, is a family heirloom. When I gave it to my aunt (for whom I was named), I was giving back to her a piece of the friend she lost. I never imagined I could make another person so happy. (She is willing the Bible back to me when she passes, so symbolically I'll have a piece of both of them with me as long as I live.)

For years my abusive step-father convinced the rest of my family that I was crazy (This was a set up to continue the abuse). Well it almost became a fulfilling prophecy when I tried to jump from a 7 story building, I was saved by a caretaker and sent to the psych ward. After a series of testing and interviews, a very caring and life affirming psychiatry resident told me I was not or never was crazy, I was just raised by very shi%%y people. He then explained that I would soon be of an age where I could take 100% control of my life. He also helped me develop very positive coping skills to help me through the next 2 years before I came of age. God bless him wherever he is. This is why I chose psychiatry as my life's work, to pass along encouragement and validation to my patients.
