I'm talking about being publicly flogged or hung.

Some people court attention all their lives, yet are given the curtain of anonymity when they fall foul of the law. Although the deterrents of flogging or hanging have been proven not to work on 'normal' people, I think that the public pain and/or death of miscreant celebrities would be an ample warning to other celebrities to behave themselves, and therefore set a better example for the rest of us.

Paris Hilton? OJ Simpson?

Public flogging and hanging are illegal as they should be. I have often thought that stocks and pillory might be a good punishment for some public figure. Set them in the middle of a busy place like Grand Central Terminal or the like where thousands of people can see them and where the media can interview them in the embarrassing position.

I'd like to see flogging come back for misdemeanors and small felonies.

Petty theft? 5 lashes - 15 the next time.
DUI - 5 lashes - 15 the next time.
Trespassing - 3 lashes, 10 the next time.
Public Drunkeness - 2 lashes, 5 the next time.

You get the idea. You can bet there will be a lot of petty criminals who will NOT be repeating their crimes. Plus it's a lot cheaper than locking them up for 30 or 90 days.

Now I think your question deserves merit. That reminds me when I was in school,1-12. They used to punish you if it was serious enough with a paddle, one to even three times. Depending on what you have done. The whole school knew that you were punished. Just a analogy to your question. I am with you on capital punishment. All you have to do is think about it. The way when I grew up in school. Seems that kept us all in line. Being punished, I guess a kind of public capital punishment. You know they don't do that in our schools anymore. Just kick you out for a few days. Man thats what the kids want. Now they wonder why they are out of control. As for your question. I think that maybe that would work. Teach em a lesson that we all could hear about. You know that would be one hell of a deterrent! If we are all supposed to be equal, then why should money even be a factor! The system is all messed up. It seems if you got the cash you can do what you please. I really do agree, I think it should only go so far though. In our country it seems, you know its true, if you got money seems to me they can do what they please. O.J is a perfect example! Just slap em on the wrist. To me anyway, our system needs to be adjusted!

I see nothing wrong with publicly administering punishments. Perhaps it would discourage some participants. Public humiliation would send a message to many a ne'er do well.

Justice is blind. Yours are bad ideas. Mr. Simpson was acquitted.
