egg donation is like going through IVF. the donor will have what is called a "retreval surgery" where the eggs are harvested from the ovaries. All the viable eggs are fertilized by the recipients husband's sperm or donor sperm, and the eggs that become fertilized are allowed to develop until they are 3 days old. Then they are transferred into the recipient's uterus. 11 days later the recipient is tested for pregnancy and it is not always successful. If you are thinking of donating, it is a timely process and you are not always compensated well. You may only be compensated by receiving free treatment and medications, or these are paid for by the recipient.
It can't be taken lightly because you must understand that there will be children in the world genetically tied to you but you will have no right to them. It is up to the recipient if they want you in the child's life, or even if they want the child to know that he/she is not genetically tied to their birthing parents.

Women who can't use their own (because of age, not having ovaries, dieases, etc)..Pretty much what everyone else said except they can be transferred on day 3, 5 or even 6 after being fertlized. They would be transferred to the woman or a gestational carrier.

egg donation is when a woman has her eggs harvested and they are given to a woman who cannot produce or canot use her own eggs. Its a complex process, and should not be taken lightly, but its a blessing for couples who can't concieve on their own.
