With proof of ownership of the vehicle, a dealer or locksmith will create a new key for you.

If you don't already know what to do, a locksmith or garage may be a good idea. Assuming you're asking here because that's a no-go, let's get started:

Ok, you need to defeat two things: The mechanical steering lock, and the electric ignition switch. The electrics are easy: Either remove the switch and use a screwdriver, or simply short circuit the right wires (hotwiring). Steering lock is tougher: Forget trying to force it, you'll more likely than not permanently trash something. You need to get the ignition lock to turn as it would normally to release the steering.

Have you got the remains of the old key? If yes, get a new one cut.

If not, or it's jammed in the lock, life gets interesting. You might be able to get a new key based on the chassis number etc, but if not, you're going to have to get a bit brutal with the ignition lock.

Normally, the lock won't come out of it's housing without being turned to the first click, which you can't do with no key. So you have to drill out the lock mechanism until the tumblers are gone, then turn the switch with a screwdriver or pliers until it's in the position for removal (there's normally some kind of sprung latch to stop it just falling out) and get it out.

Then you just slide in a new or secondhand lock mechanism, and it should all be peachy again. Certain manufacturers (ford, bmw etc) use locks that can be custom-built to match the others in the car, so you don't need a new key. Costs about twenty quid or so for the parts, more for newer cars or ones with complex designs.

You can of course just rip out the lock with a slide-hammer, but you risk trashing other parts in doing so.

Drilling out a lock assembly on something like a Ford is fairly easy, takes about half an hour including cleaning up all the mess afterwards.

If your car has a transponder immobiliser or other security device, you'll also need to get past this, but that isn't really an easy diy job.

Many ways but i would do it this way. Remove the panel from underneath the steering wheel, usually about 3 screws. then you can see the ignition, on the right it is the entrance where the key is inserted, but on the other side you can see about 10 wires coming out , just ripp off the black cap which all the wires are connected to and insert a key that fits that ignition it doesn't have to be the same key just the same type.

Your car can be started by tapping in the key code you got with your car, if not garage will supply on proof of ownership. this works meantime whilst awaiting key replacement.

get a new ignition switch (thing key goes into) from a dealer and a key will come with it. Then just remove old one from steering column and insert new one.
