Bad thermostat, $5 part, half hour labor. If you have the tools, the patience and know what you are doing.

I think you would notice a leak....

The mixture of the antifreeze may be incorrect!! It needs to be %50 water and %50 antifreeze. Too much antifreeze, and the coolant is too thick and won't cool easily. Also, the boiling point is too high in that case.

Also, check your water pump belt. It may be slipping.... What happens if you run the heat?? That should cool it down.

Also, when the motor is cold, pop the radiator cap. Look for some reddish clay kind of in there. If you see that, you need a new radiator as someone may have put bars-leak in there or something to prevent a past leak. That stuff ruins radiators, cause it turns to a clay-like compound.

Thermostat, Water Pump, Coolant, Fan Clutch, Electric Fan Motor, Bad exhaust. A clog or obstruction in the exhaust could cause an overheat, not really very probable, but it can be many things.
Bad fuseable link not sending info to the fan/thermostat,pump.
I would think thermostat, buy a new one, replace it, properly,
Car is 15 years old, yeah, replace abuncha stuff on it. it is time.
Thermostat, Belts, Fluids, clean the radiator out, flush the oil system, change oil, filter, check all pumps, all filters.
It is overheating while in a neutral state, that means airflow is acceptable but something is wrong.

check all your fluids. antifreeze/coolant, oil, etc. you might have a leak. overheating is bad for your car. my old car used to do it all the time in the summer b/c of a leak. and it doesnt help if the ac is on. if your car seems to be overheating turn the ac off right away. pull over, if there is smoke coming from the hood, it could be bad news. if you have a leak or your low of coolant do not open the cap until your engine cools down. if you dont the coolant will splash out and could burn you.

If the fluid is OK and if you have 2 fans on this auto they both should be running, then I would guess thermostat first, water pump next. If you open the hood and there is a shuttering sound or you look at the waterpump and there is a vibration with the pully that is your problem.

As for the cause I am not sure but If you are in traffic that is not moving or in a line that you must sit for any length of time, if you notice you are getting hot, turn your heater on. It will cool your car down. believe me I have saved my car's engine doing this. I don't remember how this works, but I know I have saved my car. My husband told me this a long time ago and I just always do it. Now I know its hot out and it is not comfortable to do. But you will be amazed on how quickly your temp. will drop.

THE FAN IS NOT COMING ON TRY TURNING ON THE AC WHILE AT A STOP THAT FAN SHOULD WORK BY IT SELF .BUT GET IT FIX RIGHT AWAY . I FIX A LOT OF HEAD GASKETS BECAUSE OF THAT AT THE COST OF ABOUT $1200 TO$2200 ETHER THE FAN MOTOR IT SELF IS BAD OR THE TEMP SENSOR THAT TURN IT ON IS BAD WITCH IS MOST LIKELY THE PROBLEM , IF THE WATER PUMP OR THERMOSTAT WAS BAD IT WOULD OVER HEAT ALL THE TIME YOUR WATER PUMP IS RAN BY YOUR TIMING BELT AND IS IN SIDE THE ENGINE

The water pump may be bad, or the thermostat. Get both checked, and I bet one of the 2 is your problem. Doesnt cost much either.
