Maria Therese survived the Reign of Terror and went on to live a life in exile occasionally interrupted with attempts to restore the French monarchy.

Marie Therese first traveled to Vienna, where her cousin, Emperor Francis II, reigned. From there, she when to live at Mittau, Courland, where her father's oldest surviving brother lived as a guest of the Russian Czar. In 1799, she married Louis Antoine, who would eventually become dynastic heir to the French throne.

Maria Therese and her husband, the impotent Louis Antoine, lived in Buckinghamshire, England, from 1799 to 1814. Upon the abdication of Napoleon in 1814, the French Royal Family was briefly restored. However, when Napoleon returned, Louis XVIII (and Louis Antoine) fled. Maria Therese, nevertheless, stayed behind to rally pro-Royalist troops, winning the admiration of Napoleon, who quipped, "She was the only man in her family."

After Napoleon's second defeat, the Bourbons again returned to France with Louis Antoine heir to the throne, but an uprising in 1830 sent the French Royals into permanent exile. Maria Therese and Louis Antoine lived in Edinburgh, Scotland until 1833 when they moved to Prague [currently Czech Republic*] as guests of the Austrian Emperor. When Louis Antoine died in 1844, Maria Therese moved to a mansion outside of Vienna. She died without issue of pneumonia on 19 October 1851. BTW, the current living heir to the House of Bourbon is Juan Carlos I of Spain.
