x= the angle
90 - x = angle's complement
180 - x = angle's supplement
180-x=3(90-x)-40
180 -x = 270 -3x -40
3x-x = 270 - 40 - 180
2x = 150
x = 75 degrees

Let x be the angle.
Then the supplement is 180 - x, and the complement 90 - x.
180 - x = 3(90 - x) - 40
= 230 - 3x
2x = 50
x = 25.
The angle is 25deg, the supplement 155deg, and the complement 65deg.

Supplementary angles add up to 180 degrees. Complementary angles add up to 90 degrees.

A=angle
S=supplement angle
C=complement angle

A + S = 180
A + C = 90 --> A = 90 - C
S = 3C - 40

A + (3C - 40) = 180
90 - C + 3C - 40 = 180
2C + 50 = 180
2C = 130
C = 65, plug C back into above equations..
A + 65 = 90, A=25
25 + S = 180, S = 155

a + s = 180
s = 3*(90 - a) - 40 ==>
a + 270 - 3a - 40 = 180
-2a = 220 - 270 = -50
a = 25
s = 155
c = 65
